Google, One Step Closer to Making the OS Obsolete
With the just-released Google Browser Sync, all of your browser settings are stored in your Google Account, and then shared across all computers that have the extension installed. This is great news for Firefox users, terrible news for Microsoft.
I can hardly wait to experiment with this thing.
This sounds an awful lot like a step towards making the computer's operating system obsolete. Next it'll be Google File System Sync, and I CAN'T WAIT. Come on, GDrive, hurry up already! This is an obvious pre-cursor to the GFS, which means it's drawing closer.

The problem is, that the Browser-Sync is still really buggy.
I installed it yesterday and I have only had a lot of problems since then.
Also, I do not think, that the majority of users would use such a file-sync service....why use that, if you can use an CVS/SVN server?
about time someone made a step to making computing on the web. I'm glad it's a company like google which tends to at least have half decent, fun solutions and not the same old corporate blandness of Microsoft.
but on the other hand, google is also becoming a bit of a global power. hmm, big brother...
I think Google is the Anitchrist. Just watch. . .I called it.
Before long we'll all be running GooOS!
here's the problem with the google paradigm, people. it gives the ISP an extrodinary amount of power over your computing. say GFS became a reality...do you then allow your ISP to dictate how much you have to pay to access your own data?
...and don't try to convince me that the ISPs wouldn't use this as a blunt tool. the minute they know all your porn^H^H^H^H work files resides on the googleplex, they will charge you up the u-know-what to get at it.
flowerHausDude, you raise an interesting point. But I think our brilliant friends at Google are prepared for this. I have the feeling that they'll be able to provide us our data unrestricted, at possibly faster speeds than currently available. Rumor has it, they're buying up lots of dark fiber. We're in for a fun ride. :-)
I just love google! They have so many features! LIKE THIS BLOGGING IDEA! I used to just blog on myspace..but then I discovered that google has yet another feature! so i switched here and I like it better cause it is more of the whole quality not quantity idea. This site is dedicated ONLY to blogging, so all the resources are focused on improving the blogging atmosphere, if you will.
BTW, GMAIL ROCKS!
Gmail rules! Google rules! Viva!
Do you know anything about the new Internet Explorer the Beta. I downloaded it and it has been a nightmare.
really cool blog!
check this one too: www.coollokingads.blogspot.com
Where's Dr. Daystrum when you need him?
chumly: I don't know much about IE 7 Beta, I use Firefox most often.
wolf: Thanks! And that blog link is very interesting. You've got a new subscriber. :-D
fourty_two: Who is Dr. Daystrum?
chase: lol That's a scary thought.
john: That would be the day! GooOs. Three Os. :-D
I just switched to Firefox. It's so much better than IE. I'm sure tons of people agree. Anyhow, I must say, your one smart cookie. I'm a little computer retarded myself. Neat blog!
I've not paid a cent for a Google service. Thank G!
Google have expanded my opportunities and keep my focus updated, the products I use work very well. I nearly fell off my chair with excitement when I read the word GDrive!
I can’t explain HOW handy that would be for me in a 3rd world on dark-ages bandwidth. Slow YES; buggy – ja um it works… I remember days when bugs made the occasional problem of today an hourly nightmare…
Gtalk – Google – Gblog – desktop – Google Earth – Google Mars (can’t wait to see Tithonia for myself) – Can’t wait for GDrive – and as for www.google.org
Google has my allegiance!
I can’t wait for GooOs
I tried Firefox once. For Commercial reasons (not surfing porn sites before you ask - lol) I need to delete ALL history, cookies and temproary files after each session. i.e. leave no trail. I found this to be much harder on Firefox than IE
Google is serving its self
Google Does not give a true search
but dirrects traffic to sponcered adds and only to its self and the Blogger system.
Msn is the best web browser followed by firefox for independent web search Its my opition, build a web site and try out the different browers, AOL is very slow its takes days to renew its self.
Try the Google adsence and get that ripped off feeling, I have been banned for life, off Adsence
I have have no reason realy why, something about invalid clicks, which I have no power over. I know they have ripped me off.
My web browsers do not now work with any thing connected with Google now Hum I wonder Why?
12 hours after attacking Google, my whole system crashed and was unable to log on through my other computer someone or some company has downloaded software dissconecting the logging on process through the root dir. This takes some computing Knowledge to do this, not your every day Hacker, Had to format the disk, reinstall the bios
Some company Google is best not write any more about google, I do not want the hassel again. They may
Ban me from blogging.

Anonymouse: You said that you found it easer to delete your personal history in IE, and more difficult in FireFox. Did you know that in Firefox, you can delete all of these things by simply pressing Ctrl+Shift+Delete? You don't need to go into any menus or anything, just press those keys while in the normal browsing mode.
You can also change your settings so that none of it gets saved in the first place.
Yeah, I can't wait till the "gDrive" either!
CJ,
yes google is buying the dark fiber but they will run up against the same problem that other businesses ran up against trying to get into the local telco business, and that is the "last 100 feet" issue. the only data pipes into most people houses are telephone and cable, and we can see by recent legislative efforts that they are fighting tooth-n-nail to keep their monopolies in check.
just the mention of cities trying to wi-max an area sends the lawyers and lobbiests into a fit of FUD. sure if google could use wireless along with the dark fiber that would be amazing but there is little hope that our lawmakers will allow such good things to happen to us little guys.
Your blog title is a very bold statement.
I dunno. I just can't get used to those upload your files to the web things. I'm afraid someone will steal 'em all!
Unfortunately, I mostly use Safari, but since I just re-re-re-updated Flock (Finally! Blog posting works again) and imported all my Safari bookmarks, I'll see if this extension works with Flock. Kinda roundabout. Certain to be buggy. LOL
I actually don't have any bookmarks I'd be embarrassed to have people know about, but a lot of people are worried this is some sort of privacy nightmare in the making. I wonder if these same people have no issues supplying their name and password to use their nifty GMail gadgets and widgets to check their GMail. I'm frankly surprised spammers haven't put out spyware GMail monitoring apps that secretly send the names and passwords to their servers in Europe so they have new accounts to spam from.
At any rate, I may fire up Firefox to check this feature out. Sounds useful and time saving.

Are we praising the GooGods here or what?(ha!)
Just kiddin’ -new to Blogging and this is great stuff
Thanks All!
I love all the tools google has provided, I think that many people have really come to embrace the Google world. Gmail, Sitemap, Google Earth, Google Desktop... It's all so great..
The OS becoming obsolete will never happen. Without an operating system all you have is hardware. No instructions would get executed. What do you think the hardware uses to run? oxygen? Google is two guys with computing science degrees who like to have fun and make stuff. Then they became a company and hired even more programmers to work on cool stuff. One major difference though, they are all about open source software. Google runs on tens of thousands of computers all rigged together as a cluster. Which operating system do you ask? Why Linux of course, the free operating system.
Perhaps I should have used the word "irrelevant" instead of "obsolete." You're right that the OS doesn't seem to be moving towards becoming obsolete at the hands of Google or any other company, at least in the "foreseeable" future. :-)
Google has not yet decided whether or not to save two years of your searches to hand over to the Feds for their perusal. Their decision will be momentous, in terms of our personal freedoms and liberty. This bears close scrutiny, and I urge everyone to let Google know how they feel about their search data being given to the Feds.
Where will Google go from here?
When media asked Alan Eustace a few weeks ago if a word processor that would be aimed at Microsoft Office is in the making, the head of research and engineering at Google declined to comment. The question was based on the back of Google's acquisition of Writely in March 2006. The start up had all the ingredients in place to build an alternative to Microsoft's money spinner. But that was classic Googlekeep, denying everything until a product is ready to ship.
Which is why, to get some perspective of what plans Google may have up its sleeve in the near future, it makes sense to look at its acquisitions both past and recent.

CJ.... Dr. Daystrum was the computer scientist from the original star trek that was replacing captain kirk with the M5 computer. M5 then went on a killing spree against star fleet ships, Dr. Daystrum had a nervous breakdown ("if not on the verge of insanity" - Bones
Then kirk made M5 fell guilty about what it had done and spock and scotty pulled out the plug.
I love it : you know that some day soon google will come out with a free OS.
While the idea of browser based services such as word processing, spreadsheets, etc. is interesting, as is the concept of GDrive, I notice no one noticed the glaring problem---many people, not just worldwide but here in the US, don't have 24/7 high-speed internet. Combine that with the increase in laptop usage, and the reality that while traveling you still cannot find an open reliable wifi connection, then having ALL your services and data only accessible on the web is frightening at best. IMO, I prefer to have the best of both worlds. Simple apps on the computer itself for those times with no internet connection, and on web drives for access and storage. I use .Mac, which yes, is a paid service, and find all of these features with virtually no problems. The reliability and absense of ads is well worth the yearly fee.
GDrive is in...Try GSpace firefox Extension. Its your 2.7 GB online drive...!! (It has certain limitation on file size..but a great start)
Hey, now this sounds really cool, once the bugs get ironed out!
It's always fun to see what Google is coming up with!
I can not wait for Microsoft's IE to be obsolete! Love my firefox...
